Canada Select is an industry led, consumer sensitive rating program, developed for the purpose of providing the travelling public with a national consistent standard of quality within our accommodation designators.

What are the benefits of "Canada Select" to the Owner/Operator?

Provides an effective marketing tool: Extensive Advertising and Promotional Campaigns inform consumers of the Canada Select program. Star ratings are published, with the operators consent, in provincial tourism literature, providing participating properties international and domestic exposure as preferred properties. A new marketing strategy has been developed to further enhance consumer awareness of Canada Select properties. All Canada Select properties may use the Canada Select logo in its marketing and is provided Canada Select signage as part of the rating fee. Improves Industry Standards: Evaluation and rating of properties ensures and enhances minimum standards and stimulates improvements. Assists in the development of policy: An inventory of accommodations, coupled with research on market mix, assists industry and government in the development of policies and strategies to help industry grow.

How was Canada Select Developed?

Canada Select was developed after extensive consumer research into what was expected and considered important at various star levels and categories of accommodations. 

Accommodation Designators

As can be appreciated, comparing a hotel to a bed and breakfast would be like comparing apples and oranges. Current consumer research indicates that roofed accommodations should have distinct categories.

Each accommodation designator is comprised of properties having similar characteristics; however, actual facilities, amenities and services may vary.

The accommodation designators are:

  • Apartment
    • A room or multiple rooms designed as a residence and generally located in a building occupied by more than one tenant
  • Bed and Breakfast
    • Accommodation offering up to 4 rental units in a private home, ensuite, private or shared bathrooms with common living room, breakfast available
  • Bed & Breakfast Inn
    • Accommodation offering 5 plus rental units with ensuite, private or shared bathrooms, breakfast available
  • Boutique Hotel
    • Typically between 10 and 100 rooms and often contain luxury facilities in unique or intimate settings
  • Cabin
    • Free-standing rental unit with bedsitting room and bathroom – may have kitchen facilities
  • Condominium
    • A form of housing tenure where a specified part of a piece of real estate (usually of an apartment house) is individually owned
  • Cottage
    • Free standing unit with one or more bedrooms, a bathroom, separate kitchen / living room area
  • Farmhouse
    • Accommodattions on a working farm
  • Fishing & Hunting
    • Establishments providing the serices necessary to cater to the fishing and hunting sports person
  • Glamping
    • Glamping pivots on a high level of service that focuses on the complete comfort of the guests. When Glamping, there is no tent to pitch, no sleeping bag to unroll, no fire to build. Whether in a tent, yurt, airstream, hut, villa or treehouse, glamping is a way to experience the great outdoors without sacrificing luxury
  • Hostel
    •  Dormitory style accommodations with shared bathrooms, usually offers living room and kitchen for guest use
  • Hotel
    • Property provides internal access to rental units; ensuite bathrooms, food service, meeting and conference services are usually provided
  • Inn
    • Property providing rental units with ensuite, private or shared bathrooms with separate guest living room, serving breakfast and evening meals
  • Lodge
    • Rental units in a wooden structure, private or shared bathrooms
  • Motel
    • Property provides external access to rental units
  • Resort
    • Destination property providing rental units with private and / or ensuite bathrooms, food service and extensive on-site recreational facilities
  • Suites
    • Suites offer multiple rooms, with more space and furniture than a standard hotel room. In addition to one or more beds and bedroom fixtures, a suite includes a living room or sitting room, sometimes with a couch that converts into a bed. Dining, office and kitchen facilities are also added in many suites
  • Tourist Home
    • Rental units in a home, ensuite, private or shared bathrooms, common living room.  Owner may not live on premises, breakfast may be available
  • University
    • Dormitory style accommodation, usually with shared bathrooms
  • Vacation Home
    • A home other than the owner’s primary residence that is used for rental purposes for the traveling and vacationing public
